As an abstract artist, putting your work "out there" takes courage and navigating various responses can be difficult. Women, in particular, are often conditioned to value others' opinions too much, which can inhibit creativity. It is not always easy to listen to your own voice but if painting brings you joy, then it is important to do what resonates with who you are. While it's okay to accept constructive suggestions from trusted sources, it's crucial not to be swayed too much by others' comments. I did this painting during the first year of the pandemic over an older painting. It was a breakthrough for me since it felt like it painted itself. I feel stronger and happier when I am acting in an authentic way and believe I do better paintings when I “paint for myself”.
